He then advanced to the starting lineup of Fortuna and scored his first league goal on February 6, 2017 in a 5-2 home win against Jong Ajax. In his first season he scored two goals in 24 league games and prepared two more goals. In the following season 2017/18 he was appointed captain of the team despite his young age and became the undisputed regular player in central defense . On December 8, 2017 (17th matchday), he scored twice in a 6-0 home win against RKC Waalwijk . His strong performances for his club subsequently drew the attention of higher-class clubs to him.

In January 2018, the honorary division leader Ajax Amsterdam signed Schuurs for a transfer fee of 2 million euros, where he signed a 4-1 / 2-year contract. But he immediately returned to Fortuna Sittard on loan for the remainder of the season. In 33 league appearances, he scored eight goals and prepared four more hits. With his achievements he made a significant contribution to the rise of Fortuna.

However, Schuurs remained in the second highest Dutch division, as he played for Ajax's reserve team, Jong Ajax, in the next 2018/19 season. There he was used in 29 league games, in which he scored four times. During the season he was pulled up several times in the first team and was 14 times in the Ajax matchday squad. He played his first competitive game on September 26, 2018 in a 7-0 away win in the KNVB Cup 2018/19 against the amateur club HVV Te Werve , where he also scored. On October 7th (8th matchday) he made his league debut when he came on for Maximilian Wöber in the 5-0 home win against AZ Alkmaar in the closing stages . In this season he played in addition to the appearances for Jong Ajax, four appearances across all competitions for the first team.

On September 14, 2019 (6th matchday), he scored for the first team for the first time in a 4-1 home win against SC Heerenveen . Schuurs always spent this 2019/20 season in the first team, commuting between the starting line-up and the reserve bench. In total, he played 10 league games in which he scored a goal.
