Career as a player

Urs Birrer spent his junior years at FC Willisau.
In the summer of 1983 he moved from FC Willisau for FC Luzern in the former National League A . Between 1983 and 1993 he played his entire professional career for the first team of FC Luzern, where he won the Swiss championship in the 1988/89 season under the then coach Friedel Rausch and the Swiss Cup in the 1992 cup final against FC Lugano .
In the summer of 1993 he ended his career after 230 championship games and six goals for FC Luzern.
