Philip "Phil" Brown (born May 30, 1959 in South Shields ) is a former English football player and current coach . His most successful time as a player was between 1988 and 1994 with the Bolton Wanderers . As a coach, he led Hull City in the 2007/08 season for the first time in the club's history in the English first division.
Player career
Phil Brown started his career as a player in 1978 with the English fourth division Hartlepool United and remained in this division when he moved to Halifax Town in 1985 . Even with his new club, he did not advance to the third division until 1988. The next stop for 29-year-old Phil Brown was the Bolton Wanderers , who had made a direct return to the Third Division in the preseason . After relegation in the 1988/89 season, the Wanderers failed in each of the following two years in the play-offs and thus missed promotion to the second division. This only succeeded after the restructuring of English professional football, when Bolton won the runner-up behind Stoke City in the 1992/93 season and rose to the second division now called First Division . After relegation in the First Division in 1993/94, Brown changed for the third and last time the club and signed with Blackpool FC . With his new team he played in the third division for two years before ending his playing career in 1996 at the age of 37.
Coaching career
After he had also worked as an assistant coach at Blackpool FC for the last two years of his playing career, he took over the assistant position at Bolton Wanderers from 1996. After coach Colin Todd was dismissed, he took over the post of head coach on an interim basis from September 22 to October 19, 1999. After the engagement of Sam Allardyce as the new coach, he took over the position of assistant coach again until 2005.
Derby County (2005-2006)
His first position as head coach was the second division Derby County , where he succeeded George Burley . After unsatisfactory performance in the course of the Football League Championship 2005/06 , Brown was released on January 30, 2006.
Hull City (2006-2010)
After he had previously worked in the club's coaching team, he followed Phil Parkinson on December 4, 2006 on an interim basis as head coach of the second division club Hull City . After good results he signed on January 4, 2007 a contract as head coach until the end of the season. After the close relegation in the Football League Championship 2006/07 Brown led Hull City in the 2007/08 season to third place behind the direct promoters West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City . In the subsequent first play-off round, the club switched off sixth Watford FC 2-2 and 4-2 and moved into the final against fourth Bristol City . In the final at Wembley , Hull won 1-0 against Bristol thanks to a goal from Dean Windass and moved into the first division for the first time in the club's history. In March 2008, Phil Brown was named Manager of the Month for the Championship. After a strong first half of the season in the Premier League in 2008/09 with victories over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur , performance deteriorated significantly in the second half . Ultimately, Brown managed with his team in seventeenth with a point ahead of relegated Newcastle United relegation. During the first half of the season, Brown was named Premier League Coach of the Month in September 2008 . The club spent the season in the Premier League 2009/10 from the start in a relegation battle and ultimately rose again as the penultimate in the second year. Phil Brown was fired from the board on March 15, 2010.
Preston North End (2011)
On January 6, 2011 Brown took over as the successor to Darren Ferguson the coaching post at the relegation-threatened second division Preston North End . Even Brown did not turn around in Preston and rose at the end of the season with his new club as third from bottom of the Football League Championship 2010/11 . After the first half of the 2011/12 Football League One did not go as expected and Preston threatened to lose touch with the promotion places, Phil Brown was fired on December 14, 2011.
Southend United (2013-2018)
Brown took over the fourth division team Southend United in March 2013 and a little later played with the team in the final of the Football League Trophy , which was lost 2-0 to Crewe Alexandra . In 2015, the play-off winners were promoted to Football League One , and in the 2016/17 season they missed participation in the play-offs of the Football League Championship by one point . After a series of seven defeats from eight league games, he was released in January 2018.
Swindon Town (2018)
In March 2018 Brown took over the coaching position at the fourth division club Swindon Town . His contract with the club in 8th place was initially valid until the end of the season. In May 2018, his contract was extended by two years after the club had slipped to 17th place in the table after a series of just one win from eight league games, Brown was released together with his assistant coach Neil McDonald in November 2018.
