Ricky Sbragia

Richard "Ricky" Sbragia (born May 26, 1956 in Lennoxtown ) is a former soccer player and Scottish soccer coach with Italian roots.

Career as a player

Sbragia played in the central defense. He began his career as a youth player with Birmingham City in 1972, where he also received his first professional contract in 1974. A year later he moved to Greenock Morton in the Scottish professional league, but where he only came to four missions. In 1978 he moved to the then fourth division club FC Walsall , before moving to Blackpool in 1980 , where he stayed for two seasons. Further moves to York City and Darlington followed . In the mid-eighties, he ended his career as an active footballer due to an injury.

Career as a coach

From 1987 he worked as a coach, initially for the youth team of York City. Here he built Graeme Murty , Jonathan Greening , Richard Cresswell and Darren Williams, among others . From 1994 to 2002 he was youth and reserve team coach at Sunderland AFC , after which he moved to Manchester United , where he worked for example. B. Kieran Richardson and Darren Fletcher trained. In 2005 he became a coach with the Bolton Wanderers .

Since December 2008 he has been the manager of Sunderland AFC. He signed an 18-month contract after initially being hired as a transition coach. On May 24, 2009, however, he announced his resignation. The reason he gave, despite the successful relegation, the negative series with only five points from the last 12 games of the season.
