John James "Jimmy" Rimmer (born February 10, 1948 in Southport , Lancashire ) is a former English football goalkeeper . His greatest successes were with Aston Villa winning the English championship in 1981 and a year later winning the European Cup, although he had to be replaced after nine minutes of play in the final due to injury.

Athletic career

As a schoolboy, Rimmer joined Manchester United in 1965 , where he signed his first professional contract two years later. He stayed at Old Trafford for a total of eleven years , but was mostly overshadowed by regular goalkeeper Alex Stepney . Among other things, Rimmer sat on the bench when his club won the European Cup in 1968 in the final . Stepney's permanent presence ultimately ensured that Rimmer only played 46 games for United.

The next step in his career made Rimmer in October 1973 when he was loaned to the Welsh club Swansea City . His performances at the fourth division were so good straight away that Arsenal FC decided to sign Rimmers in February 1974. With the "Gunners" he was intended as a long-term successor to Bob Wilson . In the remaining games of the 1973/74 season he was only used once, but remained without conceding a goal against Liverpool . Wilson announced his retirement at the end of the season and Rimmer moved up to the position of "number 1" in the following three years. As a regular goalkeeper at Arsenal, he also played his first and only international match for the English national team against Italy . However, on May 28, 1976, he was only used in the first half and conceded two goals - after his exchange, England won 3-2.

When Terry Neill finally took over as coach at Arsenal FC, he brought Pat Jennings from his old club Tottenham Hotspur with him as the new goalkeeper. Rimmer moved to Birmingham to Aston Villa after 146 games for Arsenal . For the next six years Rimmer Villas was first goalkeeper and he won the English championship in 1981. In the following year, Rimmer was even in goal during the final of the European championship competition , before he had to be replaced after only nine minutes injured - his young substitute Nigel Spink did not concede in the remaining season and was therefore instrumental in the 1-0 success against the FC Bayern Munich involved. Nevertheless, with the win, Rimmer was the first English player to receive the winner's medal in this most important European club cup competition with two different clubs.

At the age of 35, Rimmer left Villa to join Swansea City again. He stayed with this club even after his retirement from active sport, was later goalkeeping coach for the "Swans" and looked after the team after the dismissal of Kevin Cullis on an interim basis as head coach until Jan Mølby took over the office.

Rimmer then went to the People's Republic of China as a goalkeeper coach, where he worked for the Chinese national team and the Dalian Shide club for many years . He now works in Canada .
