Kenneth "Kenny" Swain (born January 28, 1952 in Birkenhead , England ) is a former English soccer player and currently works as a coach of the England U-16 national soccer team. He celebrated his greatest successes as a player with Aston Villa , with whom he won the English championship in 1981 and in the following year won the title in the 1981/82 European Cup against Bayern Munich .
Player career
Chelsea FC
Kenny Swain started his playing career in 1973/74 at Chelsea FC in the English Football League First Division . Only after his club was relegated from the Football League First Division in 1974/75 , he was able to establish himself in the regular formation of his team. In the 1976/77 season he celebrated the return to the first division with Chelsea and then crowned this success by relegating to the First Division. The season in the Football League First Division 1978/79 was all the worse, because Chelsea rose again to the Second Division. Kenny Swain moved to the more successful league rivals Aston Villa during the season in December 1978 .
Aston Villa
The team of coach Ron Saunders ended the season in eighth place in the table and was able to increase this placement in the 1979/80 season by one place. However, the team celebrated their greatest success to date in the Football League First Division in 1980/81 , when Kenny Swain and his teammates Tony Morley , Jimmy Rimmer and Peter Withe surprisingly won the title in the English championship. This success experienced an increase in the following season, when Villa, under the new coach Tony Barton, won the 1981/82 European Cup with Peter Withe's golden goal against the German champions FC Bayern Munich . After these great successes, Swain, now 30, moved to Nottingham Forest in October 1982 .
Nottingham Forest
His new club had also been very successful before. With the coaching duo Brian Clough and Peter Taylor , Forest had become English champions in 1977/78 and had then secured the title in the European Cup two times in a row . At the time of Kenny Swain's change, the team was in upheaval and could only reconnect to the top of the table in the Football League First Division 1983/84 . In the same year reached Nottingham with Kenny Swain, Hans van Breukelen , Viv Anderson and Garry Birtles in the UEFA Cup 1983-84 semi-final and failed only there just wide of the Belgian representatives Anderlecht .
Portsmouth FC
In July 1985, the 33-year-old Swain moved to the second division club Portsmouth and missed promotion to the first division with his new club in the 1985/86 season only in the play-offs . This succeeded a year later by a second place in the table behind Derby County . After relegation from the Football League First Division in 1987/88 , the now 36-year-old moved to the lower class club Crewe Alexandra and let his successful playing career end there in the following years.
Kenny Swain has been coaching the England U-16 national soccer team since 2004.
