Dennis Mortimer (born April 5 , 1952 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player. He was best known as the captain of the Aston Villa team , which won the European Cup in 1982 . The midfielder is considered one of the best players in Aston Villa's history.
Athletic career
Mortimer began his career at Coventry City and developed there from the youth department to a regular player in the first team. A first highlight was his participation in the final of the FA Youth Cup , where he lost to Tottenham Hotspur 3-4. He celebrated his breakthrough in 1972 at the latest when the new coaching team Joe Mercer and Gordon Milne joined the "Sky Blues". Together with Willie Carr , Colin Stein , Brian Alderson and Tommy Hutchison , Mortimer was part of one of the most prestigious attack lines and one of the most promising midfielders in English football at the time.
A number of top clubs have expressed an interest in signing Mortimer, who finally hired shortly before Christmas 1975 at Aston Villa in Birmingham . Between 1975 and 1985 Mortimer made 405 competitive games for Villa and scored 36 goals. After winning the English championship in 1981, he celebrated his greatest success a year later. In the final of the European championship competition, he led his team onto the field as captain and after the 1-0 win against FC Bayern Munich at the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam - Peter Withe scored the decisive goal - the only European trophy in the club's history to this day from Aston Villa.
After his time in Birmingham, Mortimer made a brief move to Brighton & Hove Albion , but only stayed there for a year before returning to the Midlands . His move to Birmingham City , Aston Villa's local rival, was not without controversy among his old supporters. Mortimer's last active position was as a player-coach in the field of non-league football at Redditch United. He later gained coaching experience as assistant coach to Osvaldo Ardiles at West Bromwich Albion . Despite his success in club football, Mortimer came to appearances in the English U23 and B selection, but never to an international match for the English senior team .
Later Mortimer worked more in the youth field and trained young players and coaches (including Alex Penny ) in the Midlands . In addition, he is also involved in women's football and holds a director position in the women's division of Wolverhampton Wanderers .
