The Capella University is a private distance university in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA , which offers exclusively online teaching. It is supported by the Capella Education Company, a public company listed on the New York Nasdaq .

The university was founded in 1993 and offers degree programs in subjects such as Economics , Computer Science , Education , Health Sciences , Social Work , Psychology, and Public Safety leading to degrees such as Bachelor , Master , Master of Business Administration , Ph.D. or other doctoral degrees. There are around 870 online courses, 19 study programs in 116 specializations. There are currently 19,900 students enrolled (from all US states and from a total of 56 countries). The university has 1040 administrative staff and more than 1000 teachers. As is customary at the for-profit US universities (such as the University of Phoenix, DeVry University, Walden University, Corinthian Colleges, Strayer University, etc.), only a small portion of the teaching staff consists of permanent professors, most of them teach part-time.

The college was founded by Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation . He developed the idea of ​​creating a university especially for working people that would organize teaching regardless of time and place. Shank founded the original company in 1991, which was later renamed the Capella Education Company. In 1993, Dr. Harold Abel on the company who had served as president at three universities. They rebuilt the company and established the "Graduate School of America" ​​- today Capella University. Abel became its first president.

The state of Minnesota granted them the first license, in 1997 it was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, Capella is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The very important regional accreditation that distinguishes all reputable universities in the USA was thus secured.

In 1999 Capella participated in the US Department of Education Distance Education Demonstration Program, with which the US Department of Education tested pilot projects for Internet-based distance learning.

In 2001 Capella University was named one of the news magazine's "Best Online Graduate Business Programs". In 2003, Capella Education Company was nominated for the 500 Hall of Fame by business magazine Inc. after it named the company five times in a row in America's 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies.

As early as 2004, Capella had more than 10,000 enrolled online students, and the 5,000th student graduated a year later.

2006 was the year of the IPO (NASDAQ: CPLA).
