Vegard Heggem (born July 13, 1975 in Trondheim ) is a former Norwegian football player . In 2003 he had to end his playing career due to a chronic injury.

As a national player of Norway , he took part in the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Football Championship .

Club career

The early years

Heggem started his professional career late. Until 1995 he played for the lower-class clubs Rennebu IL and Orkdal IL, until he was scouted by his home club Rosenborg Trondheim . Up to this point he was not in any youth selection in Norway.

Rosenborg Trondheim

At Rosenborg he was used in the first game of the season and was able to quickly fight for a regular place. He benefited from his versatility in defense or defensive midfield.

In his first year he won the Norwegian Cup and championship title. Two more championship titles followed and a sensational Champions League season for Rosenborg in 1996, in which they made it to the quarter-finals. Veggem had previously caused a stir internationally after he secured the decisive goal for Rosenborg's progress in the decisive game against AC Milan . The goal at Milan's San Siro Stadium is considered one of the greatest moments in Norwegian football.

In 1998 he made his international debut for Norway and was nominated for the 1998 World Cup . A transfer abroad was already a done deal at this point.

Liverpool FC

After receiving several offers from various European leagues, he signed a contract with Liverpool during the World Cup . It was the first transfer of the newly formed manager duo Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier , who signed him for the equivalent of around € 5.2 million.

Despite strong competition on the right at Liverpool, Heggem immediately captured a regular place and thanks to his combative attitude and two spectacular goals against Middlesbrough FC and Bradford City became a crowd favorite on Anfield. In 2001 he was able to win the UEFA Cup with Liverpool , but was not used due to his injury.

End of career

During his time at Liverpool he got more and more problems with the thigh muscles, which repeatedly degraded him to a viewer. In the 2000/01 season he could only play three league games and had to go into a long convalescence. Until his contract ended after the 2002/03 season, he was still in the squad of Liverpool and worked on his comeback. However, since his condition turned out to be chronic, he had to end his playing career at the age of 28. He had played his last professional game in October 2000 against Derby County .

National team

After moving to Rosenborg Trondheim, he was immediately nominated for Norway's U-21s, for which he was a regular until 1998.

On February 23, 1998, he made his debut in the Norwegian national team in a friendly against France . The game ended 3: 3 and Heggem scored a goal on his debut. Due to the strong international match, he slipped into Norway's squad for the 1998 World Cup in France , in the course of which he was not used. After the World Cup he became a regular player.

He played his last game for Norway during Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands against the Yugoslav national team , in which he was again seriously injured.

In total, he completed twenty international matches between 1998 and 2000, in which he scored 1 goal.

Life after career

After the end of his career, he returned to Norway and started a sport fishing company in Sør-Trøndelag . He discovered his love for fishing while playing for Orkdal IL, which was located directly on the Orkla , one of the largest rivers for salmon fishing in Norway.

In addition to John Aldridge and Erik Meijer, he is the official "club patron" of AFC Liverpool , a semi-professional club founded by Liverpool fans .

Due to his status as a crowd favorite, he is still very close to Liverpool FC and is present at a large number of home games on Anfield Road.
