The Superliga (official sponsorship name since the 2019/20 season : 3F SUPER LIGA ) is the top division in Danish football . When it was founded in 1991, it replaced the 1st division as the first division, which has since formed the second level of the Danish league hierarchy. At the same time, gaming operations were changed from the Scandinavian annual season (games from spring to autumn, championship decision in late autumn and a long winter break) to the usual mode in Europe (games from late summer to the end of spring and a long summer break).

history

The Danish Super League was founded in 1991 and has since replaced the 1st division as the top division in Danish football. Since the 1991/1992 season was supposed to start in August 1991 and the previous season did not end until the calendar year 1990, the first season of the Danish Super League was held in spring 1991. In this, ten teams played against each other in a round trip. From the summer of 1991, the Super League was held in two rounds. The first round took place in autumn 1991. In this, ten teams played against each other in a round trip. The first eight played in the second round in spring 1992 again in a round trip for the championship. Half of the points scored from the first round were carried over to the second round. The goals were set back to zero.

For the 1995/96 season , the number of teams was increased to twelve and the game mode changed. In addition, Coca-Cola also became the main sponsor of the league, which was then named Coca-Cola Ligaen . After one season, Faxe Kondi became the league's main sponsor and was renamed Faxe Kondi Ligaen as a result. Between the 2001/02 and 2009/10 was SAS Scandinavian Airlines the namesake of the league, it was called SAS Ligaen . In October 2014, the Superliga and the Danish insurance company Alka signed a sponsorship deal on the league name . From January 1, 2015 to mid-2018, the league officially carried the sponsor name Alka Superligaen . The insurer Alka paid the league 12 million DKK annually . There was no sponsor in the 2018/19 season. For the 2019/20 season, the Danish trade union 3F became a name sponsor, so that the league started as the 3F SUPER LIGA .

Together with 23 other national professional league associations, the Superliga is a founding member of the international World Leagues Forum , which was founded in Zurich in February 2016 , the aim of which is, among other things, to bundle the interests of the professional leagues and their common views in front of FIFA and other institutions from sport and To represent politics.

mode

Since the 1995/96 season, instead of ten, twelve teams have been playing against each other in three rounds, which results in 33 game days. All teams meet each other three times, so that each team plays two home games against the same opponent in one season. However, it is ensured that no team has more than 17 home games.

According to the three-point rule, there are three points for a win and one for a draw. The last two in the final table will be relegated to the 1st division without relegation games , the two first-placed teams being promoted.

For the 2016/17 season, the Super League got a new mode in which the league was increased to 14 teams. In the new mode, each team will only play two games against each opponent. At the end of this phase, the six teams that have scored the most points play the title among themselves, with the points that they previously scored in the league being retained. The eight teams in the lower places, on the other hand, play in two separate groups: The better 4 teams play for the chance of a Europa League place and the last teams for relegation.

The Danish football champions since the introduction of the Superliga

In the transition season 1991 a shortened championship was played, since the last season had only ended in winter 1990 (champions: Brøndby IF ) and the season 1991/92 should already start in autumn. Only ten teams played a season with a round trip (18 game days), and the champions were again Brøndby.

The 1991/92 season was also a transitional season: since the changeover to the summer break had not yet taken place in the second division, two teams were relegated at the halfway point of the season (after the 18th matchday), the eight remaining determined in 14 others Play the master. Here, surprisingly, Lyngby BK was able to prevail.

What is striking about this list (see below) is that the champions come from the greater Copenhagen area ( FC Copenhagen , Lyngby BK , Brøndby IF , FC Nordsjælland and Herfølge BK ). Only the clubs Silkeborg IF (1994), Aalborg BK (1995, 2008, 2014) and FC Midtjylland (2015, 2018, 2020) were able to break the dominance of the greater Copenhagen area.
