Alfonso Ratliff (* 18th February 1956 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American boxer and both WBC - as well as " Ring Magazine " - and lineal championship in the cruiserweight division .

amateur

As an amateur, Ratliff won several medals, including the Chicago Golden Gloves and the Intercity Golden Gloves , both of which he won in 1980.

Professional career

Ratliff was able to win all of his first 13 fights, most of them by knockout. In his 14th fight, he faced the undefeated, later WBA and WBC heavyweight world champion Tim Witherspoon in a 12-round non-title fight and lost by technical knockout in round 7. He lost to Pinklon Thomas by TKo in round 10 and thus took his second defeat against an undefeated world-class heavyweight who became WBC world champion a year later.

In June 1985 he met Carlos De León in a WBC world championship match and won by split decision. However, he lost the belt in his first title defense, which took place only three months later, to Bernard Benton . Against Mike Tyson he went hard in the second round in the following year

On April 12, 1987 he defeated Craig Bodzianowski (17-0-0), in this battle it was for the USA Illinois StateTitle in the cruiserweight division. In 1988 he lost to the undefeated Gary Mason and won the vacant USBA cruiserweight title with a win over Rickey Parkey (27-7-0).

In 1989 Ratliff played his last fight against Lee Roy Murphy (26-0-0) and lost by knockout.
