Gary Mason (born December 15, 1962 in Jamaica , † January 6, 2011 in Wallington , London ) was an English heavyweight boxer .

career

Mason was considered a candidate for the heavyweight world title and was known for his fighter heart and his enormous clout. He had a KO rate of 89.47%.

He turned pro in October 1984 and beat James Tillis after 27 wins against opponent Shavers . In 1989 he defeated Hughroy Currie in the fourth round by classic knockout and became English champion. In the same year he beat the amateur world and Olympic champion Tyrell Biggs by classic knockout in the seventh round.

In 1990 he knocked out James Pritchard in the ninth round. Three months later, he met Olympic champion Lennox Lewis , who had only 14 fights. Mason lost to a technical knockout in the seventh round and suffered his first and only defeat in his entire professional career. Mason was also the first world-class man Lewis could beat, and many were to follow. After this defeat he ended his career.

After three years he tried again in two fights against opponents and was able to win both without any problems, but left it with these two.

Gary Mason had an accident on his motorcycle. He hit a car and died on the spot.
