Pinklon Thomas (born February 10, 1958 in Pontiac , Michigan ) is a former American heavyweight boxer and WBC world champion.

Professional career

Thomas had a technically very good jab and was very powerful. In 1978 he turned pro after only a short amateur period. He was trained by Angelo Dundee .

In his twentieth fight he won early against "Quick" Tillis . In his 21st professional fight, he went to the eventual world champion Gerrie Coetzee in January 1983 and reached a draw. After a few more wins, including a technical knockout against Alfonzo Ratliff , he got the opportunity to compete against WBC world champion Tim Witherspoon on August 31, 1984 . He won a fight at a very high technical level (both boxers showed a very strong boxing performance and gave nothing to each other) just on points and won the title.

In his first title defense he defeated Mike Weaver by technical knockout in the eighth round. In the next fight on March 22, 1986, however, he had to surrender the belt to Trevor Berbick after a surprising loss on points.

He received another title chance against Mike Tyson in 1987 , but lost prematurely in the sixth round. From then on, things went downhill and he subsequently lost to the undefeated and emerging young talents Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe . He had to give up the fight against Tommy Morrison after the first round due to an injury. In 1992 he won the completely insignificant IBO world title in a fight against Craig Payne . Thomas was also the first heavyweight world champion of this insignificant association. He completed his last fight a good two months later against Lawrence Carter and lost to a technical knockout in round 7.

After retiring, he announced that he had been addicted to heroin as a teenager. He inspired Antonio Tarver , who was also dependent, to pursue a professional career.
