Stellstein row in Hesselbach

A row of positioning stones is a historical type of fencing in hubs and house and cottage gardens that is particularly widespread in the southeastern Odenwald . Sandstone slabs placed upright in the ground along path and property boundaries were intended to prevent free-range animals such as geese or pigs being driven to the garden from entering the gardens and causing damage there. Sometimes the curbs were only used to delimit footpaths and to prevent users of the paths from shortening over private properties.

Some of the standing stone rows preserved in the Odenwald, z. As the parking row of stones in Upper Grove Brunn and those in Beerfelden , Bad King , Erbach , Sensbachtal and other places, are now considered cultural monuments under preservation .
