Damir Škaro

Damir Škaro (born November 2, 1959 in Zagreb ) is a former Yugoslavian amateur boxer in the light heavyweight division (75 to 81 kg).

Boxing career

He was u. a. 1977 Yugoslav junior light middleweight champion, 1980 Yugoslavian middleweight champion, 1986 and 1987 Yugoslavian light heavyweight champion.

In 1978 he was defeated in the final of an international tournament in Rotterdam , the British Herol Graham .

In 1980 he took part in the middleweight division at the Olympic Games in Moscow , but lost in the first fight against the later silver medalist Viktor Savchenko . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , where he also competed in the middleweight division, he was only defeated in the quarterfinals by the later silver medalist Virgil Hill .

At the 26th European Championship in 1985 in Budapest , he was defeated in the first fight by the German Henry Maske . The 4th World Cup in 1986 in Reno (Nevada) , he finished with the bronze medal; he was only defeated in the semifinals to the Cuban Pablo Romero .

At the 5th World Cup in Belgrade in 1987 , he reached second place. He won u. a. against the German participant René Ryl , but failed in the final with a narrow 2: 3 point decision against the Russian Yuriy Vaulin.

At the 1988 Seoul Olympics , he won the bronze medal in the light heavyweight division. He beat the Bulgarian Deyan Kirilow, the Nigerian Osmond Imadiyi and the Kenyan Joseph Akhasamba before losing to the Russian Nurmagomed Shanavazow in the semi-finals.

After boxing

Škaro went into politics and was elected to parliament in 1995 as a member of the Croatian Democratic Union .
