Since then, the company has had to compare all statements about possible profits and sales figures of its dealers with figures on the actual average profits. The FTC found that the average Amway retailer was making less than $ 100 a month and more than half were making no profits.

In 1983, Amway was convicted of tax evasion and customs fraud in Canada and had to pay 25 million Canadian dollars in a settlement - the highest fine ever imposed in Canada. In 1986, Amway in the United States violated the FTC's 1979 requirements for listing the actual average profits of its dealers and had to pay $ 100,000 as a fine.
