Primera División (chess) 1976
The Primera División (chess) 1976 was the top division of the 20th Spanish team championship in chess and was played with ten teams. Champion was CA Caja Insular de Ahorros, while the defending champion CA Schweppes Madrid had to be content with fourth place. From the Segunda División were CA Condal Las Palmas and GE Seat Barcelona. While Las Palmas achieved relegation, Seat Barcelona and RCD La Coruña had to relegate directly.

mode
The ten participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament , the last two were relegated and replaced by the first two of the Segunda División. The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).
Dates and venue
The tournament was held from September 3rd to 11th at the Palacio de la Lonja in Saragossa .
Season course
CA Caja Insular de Ahorros was in the lead from the 5th lap and continued to pull away. Before the last round, the title was already certain, the lead was 5 points in the end. GE Seat Barcelona were relegated early on, while RCD La Coruña would have saved themselves with a 4-0 win over CA Peña Rey Ardid Bilbao. La Coruña only won 3.5: 0.5 and was therefore relegated to Bilbao half a point behind.
