Primera División (chess) 1978

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Primera División (chess) 1978 was the top division of the 22nd Spanish team championship in chess and was played with nine teams. The champions were the team from UD Las Palmas, which had taken over the starting right from CA Maspalomas, while the defending champion CA Caja Insular de Ahorros had to be content with fifth place. CE Vulcà Barcelona and GE Seat Barcelona had risen from the Segunda División. While Vulcá achieved relegation, Seat had to relegate immediately; The second relegated team was CA Schweppes Madrid, which did not take part in the tournament.

mode

The nine participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament , the bottom of the table and the team from CA Schweppes Madrid who had not started were relegated and were replaced by the first two of the Segunda División. The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).

Dates and venue

The tournament was held in Centelles .

Season course

In the first five rounds CE Olot pulled away from the field, but two defeats in the sixth and seventh round brought the top closer together, so that four teams had a chance for the title before the last round. UD Las Palmas, CE Vulcà Barcelona and CE Olot led with 16.5 points, CE Terrassa followed with half a point behind. Since in the last round both the direct comparison between Barcelona and Olot and the competitions between CA Peña Rey Ardid Bilbao and UD Las Palmas and between Asociación Barcinona and CE Terrassa each ended 2-2, the standings remained unchanged. Olot had to be content with third place because of the poorer team points, Las Palmas and Barcelona were also tied in terms of team points, so that the direct comparison tipped the balance in favor of Las Palmas. In the relegation battle, GE Seat Barcelona had little chance of staying up. In fact, a 4-0 win over CA Caja Insular de Ahorros would have been necessary, but Seat only won 2.5: 1.5.
