Christian Räth

Christian Räth (* in Hamburg ) is a German opera director and set designer .

Räth studied opera directing with Götz Friedrich and was then an intern and assistant to Harry Kupfer . He recently made a name for himself with the new production of a Ring cycle at the San Francisco Opera , which was also shown at the Washington National Opera .

His older productions include Falstaff at the Washington National Opera, Fidelio at the Dallas Opera , Roméo et Juliette at the Houston Grand Opera , The Magic Flute at the Cairo Opera in Egypt and Carmen at the Grand Théâtre de Genève . His recent productions include Salome at the Matsumoto Festival in Japan, Ariadne auf Naxos at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Copenhagen Opera, Die Walküre at the San Francisco Opera and Siegfried at the Washington National Opera.

Christian Räth also proved itself for new productions known productions of L'elisir d'amore at the Teatro alla Scala , Billy Budd at the Opéra Bastille in Paris and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , Troubadour and West Side Story at the Bregenz Festival and Luisa Miller at the Dallas Opera and the Teatro Real de Madrid . He has been at the Santa Fe Opera the Rosenkavalier and in Bilbao Das Rheingold staged and was part of the directing team of La traviata and Platée .

Räth has worked in directing teams at most of the major opera houses across Europe and the USA, such as Walküre at the Washington National Opera, Porgy and Bess , Hoffmanns Erzählungen and La vie parisienne at the Opéra de Lyon .

In 2015 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera as director of Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi .
