The Base Aérea de Getafe is a military airfield of the Spanish Air Force ( Ejército del Aire ) . The base is located in the region of Madrid on the territory of the municipality Getafe , some 15 kilometers south of downtown Madrid . The airfield is also used for civil purposes, including by Airbus ( EADS until the end of 2013).

history

After Cuatro Vientos, it is one of the oldest airfields in Spain and during the Spanish Civil War it was an important point of action for the republican air force. The commanding officer was the Republican Aviation Minister Hildago de Cisneros.

After the civil war, CASA built 170 Junkers Ju 52 / 3m under license from 1944 in its rebuilt and expanded Getafe plant .

Military use

The base currently (2012) houses the following airborne associations:

There are also some non-flying units.

Civil use

Airbus uses the area east of the runway. Cassidian operates the Spanish final assembly of the Eurofighter Typhoon at the site and Airbus Military converts civilian Airbus models into tank and transport aircraft, mainly from the A330 series . Components of civil Airbus models, such as horizontal stabilizers , are manufactured by the (civil) company Airbus. They are also transported to other Airbus locations with Belugas .
