history

The company emerged from the electronics division of the armaments business of the Airbus Group. The newly founded company has been operating under the brand name Hensoldt since then. The company's roots lie in predecessor companies such as AEG , DASA , Dornier , Telefunken , Siemens Sicherheitstechnik, Zeiss , Cassidian and Airbus . According to media reports, KKR is considering a partial or complete disinvestment in the course of an IPO of Hensoldt.

The name Hensoldt goes back to Moritz Carl Hensoldt (1821–1903), a German pioneer of optics and precision engineering in the 19th century. In 1852 he founded an optical workshop for telescopes , astronomical devices and microscopes under his own name and thus created one of the large optical companies in Wetzlar . After Hensoldt's death, the Carl Zeiss company acquired Hensoldt AG in 1928. This company later became Carl Zeiss Sports Optics , with optical products for civil and hunting applications, as well as Carl Zeiss Optronics Wetzlar, which is now Hensoldt's premises again.
