The Bayraktar TB2 is a Turkish combat and reconnaissance drone . It was developed by the company Baykar Technologies together with the Turkish land forces and has been in use with them since at least 2016.
drone
The fully autonomous drone can remain in the air for 30 hours without interruption and reaches an altitude of 9144 meters. It can take off in autonomous mode without ground control of a coordinator, fly to a programmed target, spy on it, return and land independently. At the end of November 2014, after successfully completing the test phase, six drones and two control centers were delivered to the Turkish armed forces . Six more drones should be delivered by mid-2015.
Bayraktar means "standard bearer".
Experts estimate the production costs of the TB2 to be rather low. This puts it in competition with the larger Chinese Wing Loong .
During combat operations, the drone can be equipped with up to four laser-guided mini-bombs of the types MAM-L (22 kg) and MAM-C (2.5 kg) or with the L-UMTAS rocket (37.5 kg).
Operations and export
In December 2015, the successful launch of an air-to -surface missile from a Bayraktar TB2 drone was reported.
Syria
During the Euphrates shield military operation, the Turkish air force bombed positions of the Islamic State terrorist militia in al-Bab, using the Bayraktar drone. In addition to reconnaissance flights, it fired air-to-surface missiles at targets.
In 2017, according to Syrian sources, a Bayraktar was shot down in Syria by a Syrian Panzir S-1 .
When Turkish troops increasingly clashed with Syrian government troops in Syrian Idlib at the end of February / beginning of March 2020, the Bayraktar-TB2 and ANKA-S drones were deployed in large numbers. An agreement with Russia that does not allow Turkish aircraft over parts of Syria but allows drones promoted the deployment.
Ukraine
In early 2019, it was announced that Turkey would sell Ukraine's Bayraktar BR2 combat drones. The then Ukrainian President Poroshenko said he wanted to buy 12 combat drones and three ground stations for his country. The deal is part of an agreement between Prime Minister Erdoğan and Poroshenko on increased military cooperation. The drones should be equipped with missile systems to destroy armored vehicles, fortifications or sea targets.
Libya
According to media reports, Bayraktar drones are also used in the Libyan civil war and contributed to the military successes of the GNA in summer 2020. Two of the drones are said to have been shot down by LNA air defense units. The LNA itself lost several Panzir air defense systems to attacks by TB2 drones. An LNA An-26 transport aircraft may have been destroyed on the airport premises by TB2 drones.
