The TAI Anka (dt .: Phoenix ) is an unmanned aerial vehicle from the Turkish manufacturer Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) . There are two variants of the Anka: A version intended for the reconnaissance, Anka-A, and an improved variant, Anka-B .

history

In the past, the Turkish military had several problems with the procurement of military technology due to foreign policy dissatisfaction. In order to increase independence and strengthen domestic industry, the Turkish Ministry of Defense and TAI signed a contract on December 24, 2004 to develop an unmanned aircraft for the Turkish Air Force. The contract has a volume of approximately US $ 107 million  and includes development, production, flight testing and delivery of three prototypes including the associated ground systems.

The Anka-A took off on December 30, 2010 at Sivrihisar Air Base for its maiden flight . The flight time was 14 minutes.

On November 23, 2011, the Anka took off on a six-hour test flight at 9:35 a.m. During the flight test, 240 test points were dealt with before it landed again at 3:35 p.m. During the flight it rose to an altitude of 18,000 ft (5486 m). Take-off and landing were carried out by the system's autopilot. In September 2012, an Anka-A crashed. This crash and problems with the payload delayed the whole thing.

The new generation of unmanned aerial vehicles was announced by the Defense Industry Undersecretariat, where the Anka Block B drone completed testing of various autopilot and landing modes on its first flight on January 30, 2015 with automatic take-off and landing.

On November 7, 2019, Tusaş announced that Anka had been in the air for 26 hours and 30 minutes on a test flight.

Weapon Systems (Anka-S)

construction

The Anka has high aspect ratio wings and a V-tail . Due to the removable wings and tail units, the aircraft can be air-loaded with a C-130 . The structure of the aircraft consists largely of fiber composite materials . The Anka also has a retractable landing gear and de-icing facilities . The aircraft is powered by a turbo diesel engine from the manufacturer Thielert in a pressure arrangement .

The aircraft is controlled via a redundant flight control system . For this purpose, the Anka is equipped with a GPS receiver for navigation , INS , air data sensors and other sensors. Control surfaces and actuators are designed redundantly. To enable the UAV to be integrated into normal air traffic, the Anka is equipped with a radio device for communication with air traffic controllers and other aircraft.

The aircraft follows a programmed path in flight, but this can be changed in flight.

The payload of the reconnaissance variant Anka-A includes optical and IR cameras ( Aselsan AselFLIR 300T), laser range finders and laser target lights . The installation of SAR sensors is also planned. Anka has a broadband data link for the transmission of the payload data to the ground station . The Anka-B has a larger payload and improved sensors.

TIHA

Anka is the flying component of the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) TIHA . It comprises in total:

  • 3 Anka planes
  • 1 ground station (Ground Control Station, GCS)
  • 1 Automatic Take-Off & Landing System (ATOLS)
  • 1 image analysis station (Transportable Image Exploration Station, TIES)
  • 1 mobile video terminal (Remote Video Terminal, RVT)
  • further equipment (Ground Support Equipment, GSE)

use

The Anka program is currently still in the prototype stage . It is planned to use the aircraft later in the border region with Iraq .

The Turkish armed forces are using the drone to defend the opposition National Army of Syria in the battle for Idlib. On February 25, 2020, one of eight Anka-S drones worth $ 29 million in Syria crashed near Saraqib while spying on Syrian forces. The Syrians claimed to have shot them down. Bullet marks were not visible in the pictures and videos.

When Turkish troops increasingly clashed with Syrian government troops in Syrian Idlib at the end of February / beginning of March 2020, the ANKA-S and Bayraktar TB2 drones were deployed in greater numbers. An agreement with Russia that bans Turkish aircraft over parts of Syria but allows drones promoted the deployment.
