In 1989 Frank Thielert founded the Thielert Group. Until 1998, the company developed high-performance engines and precision engine components for prototype and pre-series production as well as motorsport.

In 1999 the company Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH was founded and incorporated into the Thielert Group. The GmbH has dedicated itself to the development of diesel aircraft engines. Those in charge of the company see the advantage in the fact that both conventional car diesel and aviation kerosene can be used as fuel.

The company uses units from automotive engineering and makes use of the experience gained there. For example, engines from the Mercedes A-Class were modified and made suitable for aviation. An electronic FADEC engine control and a "Constant Speed Governor" were developed.

Bankruptcy and a fresh start

A former shareholder and the Schutzgemeinschaft der Kapitalanleger (SdK) have repeatedly accused Thielert AG, which acted as the holding company for the operating subsidiaries, of manipulating the balance sheet. The company rejected these allegations and was able to present an unqualified financial report for the 2006 financial year. Annulment declarations have been filed against the financial statements for the years 2003 to 2005. The Hamburg Regional Court then declared these financial statements to be void in a judgment of March 6, 2008.

Cessna planned to deliver its Skyhawk 172S aircraft with the Thielert Centurion 2.0 turbo diesel engine from mid-2008 . After the bankruptcy, Cessna decided to stop this project for the time being. Due to its low weight, the Thielert Centurion motor is used in drone construction, for example in the General Atomics MQ-1B Predator .

The subsidiary Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH applied for insolvency proceedings on April 24, 2008 due to impending insolvency. On April 30, 2008, the parent company filed for insolvency. The share was temporarily listed in the SDAX , but fell out of the index in the course of the bankruptcy. From the initial public offering to bankruptcy, the share lost over 95% of its value.

An offer period for Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH was set until August 22, 2008. The insolvency administrator Bruno Kübler announced that there were potential buyers for the insolvent company who checked the books of Thielert Aircraft Engines GmbH. In January 2009, the insolvency administrator was back in the black and production was at full capacity.

June 2013 it became known that the Chinese state-owned company AVIC , which had previously also taken over the US aircraft engine manufacturer Continental and the aircraft manufacturer Cirrus , is also taking over Thielert Aircraft Engines with locations in Lichtenstein, Altenburg and Hamburg. Thielert will be incorporated into Continental's corporate structure as Technify Motors GmbH .

In 2016, the company's founder Frank Thielert was sentenced to four years in prison by the Hamburg Regional Court for commercial and gang fraud and forgery of documents . Among other things, he is said to have embellished the company's situation with fake postings, with regard to the IPO and to pretend banks have a better credit rating . Thielert, however, wants to go into revision.

Product range

The Thielert Centurion 2.0 engine is currently available. The Thielert Centurion 4.0 is still in operation in a few aircraft, but is no longer in production. The Thielert Centurion 3.0, a V6 engine with 3.0 liters displacement, is in the approval phase.
