The Panavia Aircraft GmbH is a German defense contractors . It was founded on March 26, 1969 with the aim of taking over the "system management" in the development and production of the Tornado multi-purpose combat aircraft, which is run under the program name MRCA . The company is based in the municipality of Hallbergmoos in the Upper Bavarian district of Freising .

A distinction was made between a study, development and production phase as well as marketing. A letter of intent , a letter of intent , was issued on July 17, 1968 by the aviation company British Aircraft Corporation , Fiat Spa. , Fokker , Bölkow GmbH and Messerschmitt AG . Bölkow and Messerschmitt merged on November 1st, 1968 to form Messerschmitt-Bölkow GmbH. The Federal Ministry of Defense ordered them to hand over part of their work to the United Flight Technology Works (VFW). A little later, Fokker withdrew from participating in this project. On March 26, 1969, the British Aircraft Corporation (today BAE Systems ) (with 42.5%), Messerschmitt-Bölkow GmbH (from May 14, 1969 Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm ) (today Airbus Defense and Space ) (with 42.5%) and Aeritalia (Fiat) (today Leonardo SpA ) (with 15%) Panavia Aircraft GmbH. When it was founded, the capital was DM 120,000 (around EUR 61,360). In May 1970, the development phase for a multi-role combat aircraft with the designation MRCA (Multi Role Combat Aircraft) began.

Panavia today (as of June 2019) consists of the following investments: Airbus Defense and Space 42.5%, BAE Systems 42.5% and Leonardo 15%. The managing director is Volker Paltzo.
