The UAB Vilniaus viešasis transportas ( VVT ) is a transport company in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . It operates the city's local public transport ( buses and trolleybuses ). The company emerged from the companies (UAB Vilniaus autobusai and UAB Vilniaus troleibusai ) that previously operated the city's public transport. Vilniaus viešasis transportas was founded on November 4th, 2011.

The routes and timetables are provided by the SĮ Susisiekimo paslaugos, which also carries out the ticket checks. The tariffs are also determined by them.

history

On November 18, 1941, bus services were established in Vilnius. The fleet initially consisted of 17 old German and Soviet army buses, including buses from the manufacturers Opel , Mercedes-Benz , Büssing , Saurer , Magirus-Deutz and ZIL . The first line opened on March 13, 1946: Žvėrynas - Vilnius Railway Station . A short time later two more urban lines were introduced. The first bus depot was in the Šeškinė district . In 1948 the depot was moved to Naujamiestis . At that time there were already ten lines, six city bus lines and four regional lines serving the suburbs of Vilnius. The total length of the lines was 290 kilometers.

In 1950 the fleet consisted of 77 buses: 54  GAZ-03-30 and 23  ZIS-154 . 28 buses had been used in the city, the rest drove on the long-distance routes. At that time there were 18 million passengers a year.

The bus station , which was intended for long-distance traffic, was built in 1953 near the Gate of Dawn . After only one year, it was moved a few 100 meters to Liepkalnio gatvė . Since 1958, the bus station has been near the Vilnius train station .

In 1959 the company was renamed Vilniaus autobusų parkas . Since the company already owned 335 buses in 1960, a larger location had to be found to accommodate the vehicles. In 1964 the construction of a new depot was completed. The newly built depot is located on 6.7 hectares of land in the Žirmūnai district . The bus fleet is still housed there today.

With the purchase of Ikarus 556 buses in 1970, the company had a total of 572 buses. Of these, 210 buses served 33 city routes, the rest were on long-distance routes. 100 million passengers were transported every year. The company employed 2200 people.

In 1974 the bus station in Vilnius was completely built. 20,000 passengers used the bus station every day.

The bus depot, which is still decorated with the lettering of Vilniaus autobusai .

In 1975 there were 636 buses, 260 of which were used on city lines. More than half of the buses came from the Hungarian bus manufacturer Ikarus . Vilniaus autobusų parkas employed 2,600 people at that time, more than half of whom were bus drivers. Since there was again a lack of space due to the large fleet of buses, the bus depot was expanded to a total of 16 hectares in 1989. 141 million passengers were counted each year, of which 121 million drove on the city lines. After the independence of Lithuania, the city administration of Vilnius established good relations with cities in Germany and Norway. These now offered their decommissioned vehicles at reduced prices. In some cases, buses were even given: the city of Duisburg presented a Mercedes-Benz O 305 and Oslo even presented four MAN SL 200s .

In 1995 the company was transformed into a private company, the sole shareholder of which was the Vilnius City Council. From now on the company was called SP UAB Vilniaus autobusų parkas . The fleet numbered only 478 buses, two thirds of which were worn out. It was therefore decided to use the Karosa B 741 articulated bus for tests in Vilnius. The bus pleased the passengers and the city council, so they bought a dozen from it.

On October 30, 1996, the city council decided to split the company into two independent companies: SP UAB Vilniaus autobusų parkas (VAP) and UAB Tolimojo keleivinio transporto kompaniją (TOKS). Of the 1,843 employees, 1,334 remained with Vilniaus autobusų parkas . Of the remaining 478 buses, there were still 350 buses, most of them from the manufacturers Karosa , Ikarus, Mercedes-Benz, MAN and Volvo buses. Since then, the core business of Vilniaus autobus ist parkas has been to serve the city's public transport. With TOKS it is the opposite, namely long-distance transport. The bus station was handed over to TOKS accordingly.

Two years later, regular strikes continued as wages were cut and some lines were deleted. The strike brought nothing and the wages were sometimes paid 1 to 2 months too late. On May 18, 2000 there was a strike by bus drivers demanding higher wages. On that day, because of the strike, there were only 10 buses instead of the regular 220 buses. The situation hardly improved, so that in 2002 the company only had 947 employees. The bus fleet consisted of 275 buses.

In spring 2003 the name was changed to Vilniaus autobusai .

Vehicle fleet

Karosa B 841

Karosa buses make up part of the fleet . There are currently 59 buses (1 of them in a solo bus variant, the rest as articulated buses) on the lines. For some time now the buses have been decommissioned instead of being renovated, as is known from the Škoda 14Tr trolleybuses , some of which are older than the Karosa buses. There are two versions of the Karosa buses in Vilnius: a solo bus (Karosa B 732 and B 832) and an articulated bus (Karosa B 741, B 841 and B 941). The last delivery of a Karosa bus in Vilnius took place in 1999.

In 2003 , after the renaming, Vilniaus autobusai bought 10 brand-new Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses. In between there were four Mercedes-Benz Cito purchases .

So that all Ikarus buses could be decommissioned, new buses were needed to avoid the shortage of vehicles. The Vilnius City Council decided to buy a total of 90 new Volvo 7700s . The delivery took place from 2004 to 2006. So they bought 60 solo buses and 30 in the articulated version (Volvo 7700 A). If you add the solo bus and articulated bus variants together, that makes up about a fifth of the entire fleet that is in operation today.

Used buses make up the largest part of the fleet. Mostly they are Mercedes-Benz buses of the type O 405 , which are available in the variants solo bus, low-floor bus and articulated bus. In addition to these, there are also MAN buses, most of which come from German transport companies. In 2004 Vilniaus autobusai received three Neoplan N 4021 from the Erfurt transport company .

Vilniaus autobusai made a large purchase of 69 used buses from 2008 to 2010. Natural gas buses from the Swedish manufacturer Säffle, which were based on the Volvo chassis, were obtained. These buses were in service in Sweden before they were bought. In March 2009, Vilniaus autobusai procured four Heuliez GX 417 CNGs from the Nancy transport company . Another was added in September 2010. Three months earlier, in June, the company received two Heuliez GX 217 CNGs from Nice .

In 2011, the company acquired five Fiat Ducato minibuses . These are mostly used on the lines running through the old town of Vilnius . In addition, five Neoplan N 4407 Centroliners from Rheinbahn AG were procured .

In April 2013 Vilniaus viešasis transportas received 18 new MAN Lion's City with natural gas drive. The financing took place through the EU funds , whereby the municipality has to pay 15% of the total price itself. It is estimated that the service life of the buses will be around 15 years.

At the end of 2013, 19 new natural gas-powered Solaris Urbino 12 will belong to Vilniaus viešasis transportas. Vilniaus viešasis transportas confirmed, however, that used buses will be procured again.

Former vehicles

In the early 1990s Vilniaus autobusų parkas received a number of Mercedes-Benz O 305 G articulated buses from EVAG . These were completely withdrawn from 2006 to 2008. Some of them were therefore in operation for up to 30 years, including the time they were at EVAG. But the solo bus version of the O 305 had also been acquired. These come from various transport companies in Germany (mostly from Munich or Duisburg ).

Icarus buses were quite common at that time. Many vehicles of the types 250 , 260 and 280 were owned . Sometimes broken buses of the 280 type were converted into 260 models on their own. The last remaining Ikarus, a 280, drove for the last time in January 2009.

Vilniaus autobusų parkas received four MAN NL 202 from the Erfurt transport company in 2002. In March 2010 they were finally taken out of service.
