The SL 200 is a city ​​bus designed according to the VÖV guidelines for the construction of a standard public service bus (SL) , which came onto the market as a further development of the MAN SL 192 in 1973 and initially until 1975 in the former Büssing plant in Salzgitter-Watenstedt parallel to the SL 192 was built.

Like the MAN SL 192 , it was also offered with the VÖV front (horizontally curved windshields ) and the StÜLB front (windows curved vertically on the sides). With around 5500 units built, the SL 200 was probably MAN's most successful bus and was used by many transport companies in Germany. The SL 200 came from the standard line bus series, in which largely the same models were also offered by other bus manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Magirus-Deutz . Electric bus SL-E

In February 1970, RWE launched an electrically powered bus based on a MAN metro bus, which obtained its energy from a lead-acid battery from Varta . The 1.4 ton battery was carried in a single-axle trailer. After this battery bus was tested in Koblenz , at the Rheinbahn in Düsseldorf and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, further battery buses based on the MAN SL 200 were built from 1974 under the name MAN SL-E. A special feature of this battery bus was a single-axle trailer in which the traction batteries were housed. A total of 22 cars existed, the first eight for Mönchengladbach (391-398) with the VÖV front, and 14 more for the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn (9051-9064) with the StÜLB front. After the Mönchengladbach electric bus line was discontinued in 1981, the cars there were also sold to the Rheinbahn. In Düsseldorf, the last electric bus was finally taken out of stock in 1988.

trolleybus

The SL-200 trolleybus with EHM drive, built in 1984, remained a loner ; the abbreviation stood for electro-hydraulic-mechanical. The 17.6 tonne and 180 kilowatt strong car also had a diesel engine , so that it was de facto a duo bus . Its electrical equipment was supplied by BBC-Sécheron . The vehicle served MAN as a demonstration vehicle and in this function was used as planned by two Swiss companies. These were the Basel trolleybus and the Lausanne trolleybus , with the latter running under the car number 501.
