1984 MAN with MAN SL202 the VÖV - standard bus of the second-generation successor to the MAN SL 200 launched. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz also offered VÖV standard public service buses of the second generation. Magirus-Deutz / IVECO ceased bus production in Germany in 1982, which is why (compared to the previous generation of VÖV-I buses) no more VÖV-II model was produced, but the VÖV-II bus from Auwärter Neoplan was added .
Like its predecessor, the MAN SL 200 , the SL 202 was manufactured according to the VÖV's further developed specifications, also with the double-width entry and the large front line display that spanned almost the entire width of the car body. However, it could also be equipped with the narrow front line display of the Ü80 intercity bus. The MAN SL 202 was nowhere near as successful as its predecessor, as it had competition from the MAN NL 202 low-floor bus as early as 1989 , which is to be regarded as the successor. Production was stopped around 1993. For customers who continue a high floor wanted, the Turkish was MANAŞ built -Werk MANAS SL 222 offered.
The MAN SL 202 operated as "Wagen 135" by VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg was equipped with a natural gas drive in 1993 and tested in regular service in Nürnberg. This vehicle was the first natural gas-powered bus in Germany. On the basis of the knowledge gained through this trial, MAN developed the natural gas drive in the MAN NL 202 CNG for series production. The carriage 135 is now in the Museum of Historical tram depot Nuremberg .
In the meantime, the MAN SL 202 have been taken out of service by most transport companies and are only used by private bus operators or abroad.
