The SÜ 240 was the VÖV-I standard intercity bus (StÜLB) from MAN with an underfloor longitudinally located diesel engine in the rear . It was produced from 1973 to 1989.

1970 appeared as suburban bus to bus 750 HO-SL MAN of MAN 750 HO-SÜ , initially with 192 hp, then in 1972 as MAN SÜ 230 with 230 hp, from 1973 as MAN SÜ 240 labeled with 240 hp. The MAN SÜ 230 was produced in parallel until 1974. The vehicle was intended for overland, occasional and combined transport. The chassis and engine shared with the VÖV-I type ( MAN SL 200 ), however, received a different rear axle ratio and an intercity vehicle front. 5- and 6-speed transmissions with stick shifts from ZF were installed , and more rarely automatic transmissions from Voith, ZF or Renk. After the SÜ 240 had been built largely unchanged by the end of the 1970s, apart from the increased engine output from 1972 and 1973, followed in 1980 parallel to the SL 200 some changes. The most obvious change concerned the redesign of the rear end: from 1980 the SÜ received 240 rectangular three-chamber rear lights instead of the round individual lights, an improved dashboard and a modified steering wheel that was now adjustable in height and angle. From 1981 the drive train was also slightly modified. From the spring of 1983, the side trim strips were omitted and the rear lights were raised. Finally, from 1986, MAN diesel engines with multiple injection (MAN D 2866 UH) for installation, which resulted in a relocation of the exhaust pipe from the engine tailgate into the left rear of the vehicle. The rear axle construction was also changed in 1986, and the 6-speed buses were given longer gear ratios.

The SÜ 240 was replaced by the MAN SÜ 242 in 1987 , but due to its popularity it ran parallel to the SÜ until 1989 242 continued. In particular, the then Deutsche Bundesbahn ordered even larger numbers of the SÜ 240, which compared to the SÜ 242 was considerably cheaper.

SÜ are in the liner service 240 only to be found very rarely. Some MAN SÜ 240 are still with museum associations (e.g. B. IG Traditionsbus Südniedersachsen, City-Verkehr eV) or used by asparagus farmers.

Technically and visually similar standard intercity buses were also sold by the competitor Magirus-Deutz L 117 (until 1982) and Mercedes-Benz O 307 (until 1987) built.
