The MAN SÜ 242 was the standard II intercity bus (StÜLB) made by MAN . It replaced the predecessor MAN SÜ 240 in 1987.
After the MAN SL 202 went into series production in 1985, the MAN SÜ 242 was not built until the first half of 1987. This was due to the fact that the specifications of a StÜLB had only been defined at this point in time.
The SÜ 242 is based very much on the SL 202, many parts from the SL-II modular system could be used. In contrast to the MAN SL 202, the vehicle length of the SÜ 242 was lengthened by 190 mm and the wheelbase by 150 mm. With 14 rows of seats, 53 passenger seats are possible. The SÜ 242 had ABS and ASR from the start of production. Other noticeable differences to the SL are the optional underfloor luggage compartments, the narrow intercity destination display above the one-piece windshield and the single-wing swinging door at the front.
The SÜ 242 is much less well represented than its competing model, the Mercedes-Benz O 407 , which is still used today in fairly large numbers by private bus companies. The SÜ 242 has largely disappeared from the German roads today.
The engine of the SÜ 242 was increased several times during the production time, which is noticeable in the changed type designations. After the end of production in Germany in 1998, the VÖV-II SÜ was built in Turkey in a slightly modified form under the name SÜ 223/263/313/363-MANAS or Lions' Classic Ü.
