The Tbilisi International Airport (officially Tbilisi International Airport , Georgia თბილისის საერთაშორისო აეროპორტი - Tbilisi saertaschoriso aeroporti ) is the largest commercial airport in Georgia . It is located 20 kilometers east of downtown Tbilisi in Lotschini .
Airlines and Destinations
In 2018, the airport was served by German-speaking countries: Lufthansa flies daily from Munich and Georgian Airways from Vienna , Berlin and Cologne . From March 29, 2020, Ryanair also wanted to establish a connection to Cologne / Bonn Airport . In addition, transfer connections from Germany are possible with Pegasus Airlines and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen and with Turkish Airlines and Atlasglobal via Istanbul Ataturk . Air Baltic also offers flights via Riga . There are also connections to 33 countries and 42 cities in Western Europe, the Middle East and within the Caucasus region. Tbilisi is the home airport of Georgian Airways and MyWay Airlines .
Directions
The airport and the city are connected by the six-lane George W. Bush freeway and a four-lane access road. Around 1000 parking spaces are available at the airport in front of the airport building. In addition, there are regular train connections of the Georgian Railway between the terminal building and Tbilisi Central Station . A total of eight trains run each day and direction. The airport can also be reached by bus; the airport can be reached from the bus station in front of the main train station in Tbilisi with the regular line 37 of the city's public buses.
expansion
The airport was rebuilt and modernized in 2006. At the same time, it was given a new operator, the Turkish company TAV Airports Holding Co. , which also manages Istanbul Ataturk Airport . It built a new terminal with 24,000 m² of usable space, 24 check-in counters and an attached parking garage, expanded the apron and runways and was given the operating rights for 15 years.
Since the conversion, aircraft the size of an Airbus A330 or A340 can also be served and up to 2000 passengers per hour. The investment amounted to approximately 62 million US dollars . The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development granted a loan of US $ 27 million.
The renovation had become necessary after the structural capacities of the airport could no longer keep up with the number of passengers. It grew by 39% in 2005 compared to the previous year and by 28% in 2004 compared to the previous year.
Until 2005 there was only one small terminal building, built in 1995, and four aprons with 60 parking spaces for aircraft. The airport was banned for Ilyushin Il-86 and Boeing 747 machines . A special permit was granted for the landing of Air Force One by the US President in May 2005.
