Incidents

The later crashed MD-83
  • On August 18, 2007, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 ( aircraft registration TC-AKN ) was hijacked on Atlasjet flight 1011 from Cyprus to Istanbul. The pilots told the two kidnappers that they would have to stop over in Antalya to refuel. The kidnappers reached an agreement with the Turkish authorities, after which women and children were released. The lack of overview of the kidnappers during the release was also used by most of the other passengers and the pilots to escape from the machine. With only a few hostages remaining, the kidnappers finally gave up. The “explosives” used by the kidnappers as a threat turned out to be harmless plasticine .
