The Boğaziçi Hava Taşımacılığı ( German  Bosporus air transport , short BHT , unofficially from English and Bosphorus Air Transport ) was a Turkish airline with headquarters in Istanbul .

history

The founding of Boğaziçi Hava Taşımacılığı took place on December 1, 1986 with the significant participation of Turkish Airlines . The latter contributed around 85% to the start-up; the remaining shares were taken over by other Turkish companies and banks before BHT finally started operations in July of the following year 1987 with a charter flight between Istanbul and Berlin-Schönefeld . In addition to two Boeing 707-300C cargo aircraft , which operated in global charter traffic, BHT used two McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10s , which it had previously taken over from its shareholder Turkish Airlines and which it now used to transport Turkish guest workers across Europe . A major breakthrough in the tourism sector was not made because tour operators tended to avoid the company due to its quality and price policy. The situation was different with regard to the cargo flight of BHT: In 1988, transporting around 4,000 tons of cargo to America, Europe, Asia and Africa, BHT operated its own warehouses and cold stores at the airports in Antalya, Ankara, Adana and Izmir.

Later, the BHT fleet was supplemented by leased Boeing 727-200 machines , which also operated from Northern Cyprus . A line connection was also established between Istanbul and Ankara . Then aiming for privatization , the shares in BHT were transferred to the Turkish state development bank in 1988. Since the passenger flight operations, which were responsible for around 75% of BHT's income, had fallen short of expectations over the years, the airline's search for investors turned out to be difficult and ultimately unsuccessful. The plans made towards the end of 1988 for the use of a Boeing 737-200QC in vegetable transport could therefore no longer be implemented and BHT ceased flight operations in 1989; in the course of the same year the company was liquidated and the charter business was taken back by Turkish Airlines.

Destinations

Boğaziçi Hava Taşımacılığı was active in global cargo flight throughout its history and also operated passenger charter flights from Turkey to destinations in Great Britain, West Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In addition to the transport of guest workers, destinations in France were also served as part of package tours.
