Sultan Air was a Turkish charter airline that ceased operations in 1993.
history
Sultan Air was founded in July 1989 by Turkish private investors with the participation of the Swedish airline Transwede . The company rented two aircraft of the Sud Aviation Caravelle type from the Transwede , with which it began flight operations on August 2, 1989. At the end of 1989 and the beginning of 1990 the fleet was expanded with two Boeing 737-200s each . In the first year of its existence, the company carried 33,083 passengers.
The effects of the Second Gulf War led to strong slumps in the tourism sector from August 1990, which particularly affected Turkey . In September 1990 all tourist charter flights were given up and the rented aircraft were returned to the lessor. In the following month, Transwede sold its stake in the company. With two remaining Boeing 737-200s , Sultan Air flew international charter services for guest workers until the end of 1990 and then ceased operations completely due to the low capacity utilization. The two aircraft were handed over to the newly founded subsidiary VIP Air in early 1991 and operated within Turkey.
After the end of the war, international flights began again in April 1991. In autumn 1991 VIP Air was reintegrated into the parent company. In 1992 the company carried 464,336 passengers. From the end of 1992 three Airbus A300-B4s and two Boeing 737-300s joined the fleet. In addition, Sultan Air used additional machines of the types Tupolev Tu-154 (in 1992), Boeing 727-200 and Lockheed L-1011 (in 1993) during the main season . Due to safety concerns, the Turkish Ministry of Transport revoked Sultan Air's operating license in November 1993. The company was liquidated in the same year.
