Istanbul Airlines (İstanbul Hava Yolları) was a Turkish charter airline that also operated national scheduled flights from the beginning of 1996 . The company ceased flight operations in 2000.

history

Istanbul Airlines was founded in December 1985 by Turkish private investors in Istanbul . Flight operations began on March 14, 1986 with two Sud Aviation Caravelle aircraft taken over from SAT Flug and two BAC 1-11 leased from the Romanian airline TAROM . In the first year of its existence, the company carried 105,122 passengers.

After Istanbul Airlines was able to win other tour operators as customers, including the holiday provider Öger Tours , the fleet was expanded in 1987 with two additional Caravelle and in 1988 with a Boeing 737-400 . Rented machines of the type Boeing 727-200 came into use from 1991 and gradually replaced the Caravelle. In the 1990s, Istanbul Airlines developed into one of the leading Turkish charter airlines and modernized its fleet with leased Boeing 737 and Boeing 757 aircraft . In addition, the company rented planes from other airlines at short notice if required. After the deregulation of Turkish air traffic, Istanbul Airlines started operating scheduled flights within Turkey from February 1996 . The tourist charter services remained the company's main business area. In 1997 the company had a 10 percent market share on charter routes to Turkey and carried 2,399,350 passengers with 17 aircraft.

In 2000, Istanbul Airlines ran into financial difficulties and had to return five Boeing 737s to the lessor. As a result, there were delays and flight cancellations. The German tourism company Condor & Neckermann Touristik (C&N) then ended its cooperation with the company. Istanbul Airlines ceased operations on August 24, 2000 for economic reasons. A planned resumption of flight services in 2001 could not be realized.
