In 2008 the company received approval to approach airports in the USA .

In 2009, Arik Air founded the subsidiary Arik Niger , which was finally abandoned in January 2011 after the routes were gradually discontinued in the course of 2010.

In 2010 the airline ran into liquidity problems and an Airbus A330-200 was forcibly taken possession of by the lessor in February 2011 due to non-payment of lease payments .

Although Nigeria is the largest African oil producer, the country has to import kerosene. Arik Air only offered a fraction of the flights and stopped long-haul flights.

In August 2017, Ethiopian Airlines submitted an offer to acquire Arik Air. In December 2017, Ethiopian Airlines withdrew from the relevant negotiations.
