The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is the airport of the Nigerian capital Abuja and also the second-handed traffic in the country. It is named after Nigeria's first president Nnamdi Azikiwe .

The airport has two terminals - one for international and one for domestic flights.

On November 13, 2006, the Abuja Gateway Consortium signed a contract for the management and development of the airport for a period of 25 years. The contract comprises US $ 101 million for services and a planned investment of US $ 371 million.

In April 2009 it became known that the Nigerian federal government wanted to expand the international part of the airport, including with German help. Another runway and a new terminal are to be built for around 20 million euros . The previous international terminal would then be used for domestic flights. The idea is to develop Abuja into one of the leading aviation hubs in Africa.

The contract with the Nigerian Bilfinger Berger subsidiary Julius Berger Nigeria PLC (JBN) for the construction of a second runway was suspended in March 2010 after allegations of corruption were raised. According to this, JBN should receive the equivalent of 315 million euros for the planning and construction of the 4,400 meter long runway, around 70 million euros per km. For a third of this sum, entire airports including terminals would be built elsewhere in Africa.
