MAY - Myanmar Airways International Co. Ltd. is a Myanmar airline based in Yangon and based at Yangon International Airport .
history
The airline was founded in August 1993 as a joint venture between Myanma Airways , the country's national airline, and Singaporean partners, with the support of Royal Brunei . With the new Singaporean management, new Boeing machines, better trained cabin crew and standards from the British Civil Aviation Authority , this marked the beginning of a new era for the national airline.
The company became the international airline with flights to Southeast and East Asia , while Myanmar National Airlines continued to serve the domestic routes.
The original joint venture was abandoned in 1988 and MAI was wholly owned by Myanmar National Airways. In 2001, Air Myanmar (HK) Ltd Region acquired 49% of MAI through a new joint venture, 40% remained in the hands of Myanmar National Airlines, and 11% was acquired by a Myanmar businessman. The fleet was operated by the Singaporean company Orion Air Pte Ltd. Myanmar Airways International served three destinations in Asia from Yangon: Singapore , Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur with an "all Boeing Fleet" consisting of Boeing 737 and McDonnell Douglas MD-82 . The connection to New Delhi, which was opened in March 2004, was discontinued in mid-September 2005 due to insufficient demand. In the wake of the violent crackdown on protests in late 2007 , Myanmar Airways International had to cease operations on October 10, 2007. The insurer of the leased fleet had withdrawn the cover letter due to the unstable situation in the country. The Yangon – Singapore route was initially served, as Jetstar Airways used aircraft on this route . In 2010, the Myanmar government sold 80% to Myanmar Kanbawza Bank Ltd. MAI then switched its fleet to aircraft from the Airbus A320 family , some of which were leased from ILFC . As a result, the goals in the Asian region were resumed. Since 2014, MAI has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Kanbawza Bank Ltd.
According to the company, all pilots are "expatriates" and come from abroad.
