Hemus Air was a Bulgarian airline based in Sofia and a subsidiary of Bulgaria Air .

history

Foundation and first years

The airline, named after an old name for the Balkan Mountains , was founded by the Bulgarian state in 1991 to compete with the then only Bulgarian airline Balkan Bulgarian Airlines , which was also owned by the Bulgarian state. Balkan Airlines went bankrupt in 2002.

Hemus Air was privatized in 2002 and is owned by Bulgarian investors. The airline has since tried to assert itself in the market against strong competition from foreign airlines. Another Bulgarian competitor was initially the newly founded successor to Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, Bulgaria Air . The management of Hemus Air confidently announced that Hemus Air would like to participate in the privatization process of the state-owned Bulgaria Air. Hemus Air has also set itself the goal of connecting the largest and most important airlines in Bulgaria. For this reason, it was taken over by the Bulgarian airline Viaggio Air in 2006 and its two ATR 42-300 aircraft , which have since been flying both on international routes in Europe for Viaggio Air and on domestic routes for Hemus Air.

Merger with Bulgaria Air

In 2006, Hemus Air took over 99.9% of the Bulgarian flag carrier Bulgaria Air and has been trying to expand this airline's fleet ever since. The three Bulgarian airlines Bulgaria Air, Hemus Air and Viaggio Air have been jointly owned by Hemus Air since 2007. Since the takeover of the two competitors, Hemus Air has been planning to combine all three airlines into a single airline. Since September 2007, all flight numbers of the three companies have had the IATA code FB of Bulgaria Air. By combining the routes and aircraft of all three airlines, Hemus Air hopes to be more competitive with foreign airlines. Together, all three airlines operated over 40 routes.

In the course of standardization, the two brand names Hemus Air and Viaggio Air have completely disappeared since the beginning of 2009. The Bulgaria Air brand is the only one of the three to be retained and bundles the joint route network and the fleet, which is also reflected in the new joint website. In the meantime, Hemus Air has been dissolved.

Destinations

Hemus Air recently no longer offered flight operations under its own name, but operated exclusively in the route network of Bulgaria Air.

fleet

As of July 2013, the Hemus Air fleet consisted of an ATR 42-300 .
