Hong Kong Airlines Ltd. ( Chinese 香港 航空 ), also known as Hong Kong Airlines , is a Chinese airline based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and based at Hong Kong International Airport .

history

Hong Kong Airlines was founded in 2001 as CR Airways and began operating on July 5, 2003. It was the first airline to receive an operator license after Hong Kong was handed over to the People's Republic of China. On September 30, 2006, it was renamed Hong Kong Airlines Ltd.

Hong Kong Airlines also owns HK Express, a low-cost airline , between which there is a codeshare agreement . With its help over 30 destinations in Asia can be flown to.

Hong Kong Airlines offers its customers a special frequent flyer program . If you buy five flight tickets, you get a free flight with Hong Kong Airlines or HK Express of your choice. It is also possible that when you buy five flight tickets you can upgrade your next flight to a higher booking class free of charge.

Hong Kong Airlines intended to purchase ten Airbus A380-800s . A contract award was initially due to the CO2 tax of the European Union blocked by the government of China and finally canceled in July 2014 the Airbus contradicts.

In August 2012, Hong Kong Airlines stopped their long-haul flights to Europe. This measure was justified with the poor outlook in connection with the European economy and a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, especially China. In December 2012 it became known that for these reasons the cancellation of the Airbus A380 was sought.

In June 2015, Hong Kong Airlines announced that it would be offering intercontinental flights again by the end of the year. It is expected that Australia will be served.

Hong Kong Airlines entered into a code sharing agreement with Royal Brunei Airlines in August 2016 .

In early January 2019, local media reported that the airline was about to be liquidated. The airline is struggling with a crushing debt situation.

Destinations

Hong Kong Airlines serves more than 30 destinations in codeshare with HK Express , primarily in Southeast Asia , Japan, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. There are also destinations in the People's Republic of China .
