HK Express ( Chinese 香港 快運 航空 ) is a Chinese low-cost airline based in the Hong Kong SAR and based at Hong Kong International Airport . It is a subsidiary of the HNA Group .

history

Boeing 737-800 Hong Kong Express Airways

HK Express was founded in 1996 by Helicopters Hong Kong as Heli Hong Kong. The owner was a casino operator from Macau called Stanley Ho. From 2004 to 2013 the company was called Hong Kong Express Airways. In May 2005, HK Express received line rights to five Chinese cities such as Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Nanjing and Ningbo from the Hong Kong Economic Development and Labor Bureau. HK Express received its first machine in July 2005 and began regular service to Guangzhou on September 7, 2005, followed by flights to Hangzhou on October 5, 2005. The machine was the first Embraer 170 to be used in Asia .

The first international connection was a charter flight to Taichung, Taiwan on August 30, 2005 . In November 2005 the route network consisted of 12 national and, besides Taichung, three international connections.

The HNA Group (owner of Hainan Airlines ) acquired 45% of the shares in Hong Kong Express Airways in August 2006. As of 2011, the airline is owned by HKE Holding (45%), Stanley Ho (40.3%) and Andrew Tse (14.7%) and employs around 100 people.

In early 2014, Hong Kong Express Airways was restructured into a low-cost airline and renamed HK Express. At the same time, a new color scheme was introduced.

HK Express has been a member of the U-FLY Alliance since 2016 .

In September 2017, the airline was prohibited from accepting two A320neo aircraft that had been ordered by the Chinese aviation authority. This measure was justified with previous, short-term cancellations of flights by the airline, which resulted in almost 2000 passengers being stranded. According to reports by the "South China Morning Post", the aviation authority came to the conclusion that the cancellations were a consequence of deficits in corporate management and personnel planning.

In 2019, Cathay Pacific took over one hundred percent of the airline from the HNA Group. A price of around half a billion euros was agreed for this. It was later decided to add 16 Airbus A321neo aircraft from open orders from the Cathay Pacific Group to the HK Express fleet from 2022.

In August 2019 it was announced that Mandy Ng would take over the position of CEO. She replaced Ronald Lam, who moved back to Cathay Pacific.
