International Amateur Theater Association

International Amateur Theater Association (French: Association Internationale du Théâtre Amateur , s, German: Internationale Amateurtheater-Vereinigung , short form: aita / iata ) is the global umbrella organization for amateur theaters . The organization was founded in Brussels in 1952 and, after having changed its seat several times, now has its office in London . The current president is Merja Laaksovirta from Finland. The association represents member organizations from around 80 countries on five continents, with members from the same country grouped together as a national center and national centers from common cultures in regional centers. It is recognized by UNESCO as an NGO with consultative status.

aita / iata was the initiator in the Principality of Monaco in 1957 and is to this day, together with the Monegasque national aita / iata center Studio de Monaco, co-organizer of the world amateur theater festival Mondial du Théâtre , which has since taken place every four years in connection with the aita / iata world congress .

The national center in Germany is the Federation of German Amateur Theaters together with the Federal Working Group on Games and Theater , in Austria the Austrian Federal Association for Non-Professional Theater and in Switzerland the Central Association of Swiss Folk Theater . These three national centers belong to the Central Europe Committee (Central Europe Committee AITA / IATA), which also includes some countries outside the geographical area of ​​Central Europe, such as Ireland, Russia and Israel. The CEC AITA / IATA is a co-organizer of the World Children's Theater Festival .
