The Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater eV (BDAT) is the umbrella organization of interest groups from all branches of the performing game. He maintains, promotes and disseminates amateur theater in German-speaking countries. With almost 100,000 members, it is one of the largest interest groups for the performing arts in Europe.

At the international level, the association forms the "National Center" of the IATA / AITA world amateur theater association with the Federal Game & Theater Working Group. The BDAT is u. a. Member of the Central European Committee (CEC) of IATA / AITA, the working group of German-speaking amateur theater associations and the International Theater Institute (ITI).

Every two years it awards the German Amateur Theater Prize “amarena”, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of amateur theater.

The association was founded in 1892 as an association of private theater associations in Germany in Berlin . The private theater company Urania from 1792 , from which the association emerged, is 100 years older.

For a long time the association had its headquarters in Heidenheim an der Brenz and another office in Lingen (Ems) . Both offices were merged in 2013 and then settled in Berlin. The BDAT includes 2,400 amateur theater groups in 16 regional associations (e.g. the State Association of Amateur Theaters in Saxony , State Association of Amateur Theaters in Baden-Württemberg ), as well as the Association of German Open-Air Theaters and the Working Group of the Franconian Dialect Theater. There is international contact with South Tyrol, Austria, Switzerland and the global umbrella organization of amateur theater.

Twice a year the association publishes the trade and association magazine “Spiel & Bühne” with a circulation of 3500 copies.

The current president is Simon Isser ( Offenbach) , who replaced Jörg Sobeck in 2016 after his one-year term in office. Norbert Radermacher, long-time BDAT president, has been honorary president of the association since 2015.
