German amateur theater award

The German amateur theater award “amarena” is an award from the Federation of German Amateur Theater (BDAT), with which outstanding achievements in the field of amateur theater are recognized. The prize is awarded every two years and is endowed with 10,000 euros. Funding is provided by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, as well as by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth and other sponsors.

The prize is awarded in five categories: drama , children's and youth theater , senior theater and two changing categories such as B. Comedy, dialect, overall work, open theater forms, open air etc.

The following award ceremonies have taken place so far:

September 18, 2010 // Berlin

September 8, 2012 // Rudolstadt (Thuringia)

September 13, 2014 // Ransbach-Baumbach (Rhineland-Palatinate)

September 24, 2016 // Offenbach am Main

September 29, 2018 // Leipzig

Selection process

All German amateur theaters are eligible to participate, regardless of their membership in the BDAT. 189 productions applied for the 2018 award ceremony. From all the applications received, a board of trustees first selects three productions for each category that are nominated for the award. A second jury (the “Prize Jury”) then selects the respective award winner from among the nominees.

Prize winners 2018

The first award was given on September 18, 2010 in Berlin by the President of the BDAT Norbert Radermacher and Gitta Connemann MdB, Chairwoman of the Enquête Commission of the German Bundestag “Culture in Germany” from 2003 to 2007.

The 2018 winners were:

  • Acting division: The stage - the theater of the TU Dresden : “Burning Walls and Urgent Calls” by Mathias Kammerer and ensemble, director: Mathias Kammerer
  • Children's and youth theater division: Die SCHOTTE , Erfurt: “Tschick” by Robert Koall based on Wolfgang Herrndorf, director: Matthias Thieme
  • Senior theater division: Senior theater in the old town (SeTA) , Düsseldorf: “Peer Gynt” by Henrik Ibsen, director: Kathrin Sievers
  • Open theater division: Deutschordensmuseum Bad Mergentheim gGmbH : “Odyssey of Life”, play development based on Homer's Odyssey, director: Florian Brand
  • Overall work: Theater-Club Kattendorf (Schleswig-Holstein)

A special “Nah Dran! - A prize for democracy theater was given to" Wilhelm Tell - attempts by stellwerk weimar, directed by Stephan Mahn "and to" KRG. - A home view of the Piccolo youth club with texts by Janne Teller, Falk Richter and ensemble members, director: Matthias Heine, choreography : Zaida Ballesteros Parejo "awarded.
