South African Express or South African Express Airways , mostly just SA Express or SAX for short , was a South African regional airline based in Johannesburg and based at Johannesburg Airport .

It maintained a close cooperation with South African Airways .

history

SA Express started flight operations on April 24, 1994 and, together with Airlink, forms part of the network with South African Airways . Although this airline operates independently from South African Airways, its flights are part of the alliance and the airline uses its facilities for reservations and bookings.

On April 30, 2016, the airline had to cease operations due to safety deficiencies. After the license withdrawal, there were tumultuous scenes at South African airports, whereupon the authority allowed the company to operate flights again.

On May 24, 2018, the airline's license was withdrawn again due to serious safety risks, at the same time the company is no longer allowed to wait for nine aircraft and they also lost their certificates of proficiency. At the end of July 2018, the company received aircraft maintenance permits and numerous aircraft received their certificates of proficiency again; Flight operations could be resumed at the end of August.

In February 2020, SA Express was instructed to file for bankruptcy with South African Airways in December 2019 . A first rescue plan by the insolvency administrator was rejected in March 2020.

On March 18, 2020, SA Express ceased operations, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic . It was conditionally liquidated on April 28, 2020 after having been placed under bankruptcy administration a month earlier .

The auction of the assets was announced at the beginning of July. At the beginning of August, the former owner of the airline Skywise announced a takeover of SAX. By mid-August, 17 companies or consortia had endeavored to partially or continue operating the airline.

Destinations

SA Express served numerous destinations in southern Africa . Further destinations were approved in September 2019, against which the sister company Airlink took legal action.
