Nationwide Airlines was a South African airline founded in 1991 and based in Johannesburg . On April 29, 2008, the airline ceased operations.

history

The airline was founded in 1991 by Vernon Bricknell. Nationwide was originally a charter airline and operates flights in Africa mainly for the United Nations and the World Food Program . Since 1995 there has also been a domestic liner service in South Africa. In the meantime, the airline was one of the three most important companies in South Africa with a market share of over ten percent. Nationwide also operated the last commercial BAC 1-11, which was used for scheduled flights.

On November 30, 2007, due to the November 7, 2007 incident, Nationwide was temporarily revoked from its license to operate an airline by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SA CAA). The scheduled flight service was completely suspended by December 7th. Part of the route between Johannesburg and Cape Town and to London-Gatwick was initially served by the only Boeing 767 in the fleet.

After the gradual receipt of the operating permits in the following weeks, the other aircraft of the airline could gradually resume regular service. However, the airline was unable to recover from the losses incurred. Therefore, an attempt was made to sell part of the company to a majority owned non-white South African holding company (English: Black Economic Empowerment ). This sale failed, whereupon the company voluntarily ceased all flight operations on April 29, 2008 due to considerable liquidity problems.

aims

Nationwide served the domestic destinations Cape Town , Durban , George and Kruger / Nelspruit from Lanseria International Airport ; as well as Livingstone in Zambia and London Gatwick Airport. There was also a connection from Durban to Cape Town via Port Elizabeth .
