Mango is a South African low-cost airline based in Johannesburg and based at OR Tambo Airport . It is a subsidiary of South African Airways .

history

Mango was founded in 2006 by South African Airways as a low-cost airline in order to compete directly with companies such as Kulula and 1time . The original project name was TULCA (short for The Ultimate Low Cost Airline , dt. "The ultimate low-cost airline"), this abbreviation is now also its call sign .

For the start of flight operations on November 15, 2006, ticket sales began on October 30, 2006. At the beginning, flights were sold for 169 Rand, which at that time corresponded to about 50% of the price of the competitors.

As of July 2010, Mango had a market share of 17% in South Africa. In December 2015, the Star Alliance announced that it would be the first low-cost airline to include Mango with the new status of a Connecting Partner. Among other things, this should provide the opportunity to check-in for connecting flights and to handle luggage to the destination. Star Alliance status holders are also to enjoy selected Mango privileges.
