The Cape Town International Airport (short CTIA ) is an international airport in Cape Town , South Africa . It is the second largest airport in South Africa and is located 22 kilometers east of the center of Cape Town. It serves as a hub for South African Airways and is the tourist gateway to South Africa.

history

The airport opened in October 1954 as DF Malan Airport , named after the former South African Prime Minister Daniel François Malan . In 1997, the construction of a new international terminal began as part of a long-term development program. In 2001 the new arrival hall opened and in 2003 the departure area was also completed.

In the course of the soccer World Cup in 2010, the airport was expanded to include a further terminal, parking garages and an approach and departure bridge in elevated railway design. Around 8.4 million passengers were handled in 2012. In 2016 the airport had a passenger volume of more than 10 million passengers.

As part of the development program, which will run until 2017, two satellite terminals are to be built, which will increase capacity to 15 million passengers per year. For this purpose, the runway is to be rebuilt slightly to the east. The currently hardly used runway 16/34 (1701 meters long), which crosses the main runway, will then be abandoned. This should avoid current flight restrictions and create space for the terminal and aprons.

Terminals

CTIA has five dispatch halls:

  • International arrivals
  • International departures
  • National arrivals
  • National departures from South African Airways
  • National departures of other airlines

Airlines and Destinations

22 airlines have Cape Town International on their flight schedule, including South African Airways, Lufthansa , Edelweiss Air (Zurich), British Airways , KLM , Singapore Airlines , Qatar Airways and Emirates . Lufthansa flies non-stop to Cape Town from Munich and, since December 2016, also from Frankfurt am Main . From October 27, 2018, Austrian Airlines will again be offering a seasonal non-stop flight from Vienna-Schwechat Airport after almost 19 years .

operator

CTIA is operated by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), which also operates other major airports in the country. Previously, all airports were operated by the Ministry of Transport , which is still the main shareholder today.
