The East London Airport ( english East London Airport ) is the airport of the South African city of East London .
history
The airport's history began in 1927 with a suggestion from officer Alistair Miller to East London City Council to create an urban airport in the Woodbrook suburb to the west of the city center. Around 1930 there were flight activities with two aircraft of the de Havilland Moth series . The previous location was given up in 1944 and a new airport was built in the Collondale district , a little further west. The construction of today's airport site began here in 1965 and was completed the following year. The facility was now named Ben Schoeman Airport after a former transport minister of the Republic of South Africa. Since the conversion and renovation of the airport facilities in 1994, it has been called East London Airport .
