The Upington Airport ( IATA: UTN , ICAO code : FAUP ; English Upington International Airport ) is the international passenger airport of the city of Upington in South Africa's Northern Cape Province .

history

The Pierre van Ryneveld Airport , according to Pierre van Ryneveld , the first commander in chief ((1891-1972) Director Air Services ) of the South African Air Force named, was built in the early 20th century. At that time it consisted of two grass lanes in a cross- track system next to the current complex of the 8SA Infantry Battalion .

Upington Airport ( IATA code UTN), which was renovated in 1968 under the name Upington Airport , served between 1976 and 1996 as a refueling stop for South African Airways planes on the routes to and from Europe, as the airline has almost no other service on the African continent Had overflight or landing rights.

Runway 17/35 was built from January to July 1976 so that Boeing 747 aircraft can land and take off here.

In the 2016/17 financial year, the airport had a passenger volume of 65,292 and 12,924 flight movements.
